Safety, Quality, Production: Why ECA and Jason Martinelli Put Safety at the Center of Everything

In the deep foundations industry, pressure runs high. Schedules tighten, weather shifts, ground conditions surprise, and contractors push for production. With ECA Field Specialist Jason Martinelli, there is only one correct order of operations: Safety. Quality. Production. Always in that order.

This simple framework guides every training session Jason leads and every job site he steps onto. “Safety is first,” he says. “We all have families. Everyone needs to go home.” The message is straightforward, but it comes with decades of hard-earned experience behind it.

Jason’s safety philosophy is deeply practical. It’s not slogans or checklists but habits. It’s how operators think. It’s how they move. It’s how they watch out for each other. His Triangle of Life—look up, look down, look out—is a cornerstone of his training approach. Operators learn to read the rig, monitor the controls, and stay aware of the crew around them. This live situational awareness has prevented countless incidents.

But Jason also explains how quality and safety are inseparable. Operators who drill with care, follow procedures, understand the ground, and maintain equipment are inherently safer. “Production will follow if you’re safe and you do quality work,” he says. “If production doesn’t follow, that’s not the operator’s fault. That’s planning.”

ECA reinforces this mindset across its entire training program. Operators are taught to trust their instincts, speak up when something feels wrong, and never drill until the site is truly ready. That empowerment matters, especially in an industry where conditions change fast and risks are real.

Jason also extends safety beyond the job site. His phone stays on 24/7 because he knows emergencies don’t keep business hours. “I remember being stuck in the rig with nobody to call,” he says. “I’d rather have you wake me up at 3 a.m. than hear about a rollover on Monday.” That level of commitment is rare, but it saves lives.

In an industry built on precision and power, Jason’s message is one that resonates. Do it right, or don’t do it at all. Safety isn’t an obstacle to production, it’s the foundation of it. And through ECA’s training, operators learn not just how to run a rig, but how to build a culture where everyone goes home safe, every day.
