Full Displacement Piling (FDP): Higher Capacity, No Spoil, ECA Support from Day One
Apr 08, 2026
BAUER drilling rigs are built for real jobsite demands. In this blog series, we spotlight the BAUER foundation methods used most across North America—where each one fits best, what it delivers in the field, and why BAUER rigs are a go-to choice when conditions get challenging. Insights throughout the series are informed by Gordian Ulrich, ECA Vice President of BAUER Product Sales & Service, whose decades of foundation construction experience span some of the industry’s toughest ground conditions.
FDP: Fast Production, Higher Capacity, Vibration-Free Installation
Full Displacement Piles (FDP) can be a high-efficiency alternative to Continuous Flight Auger (CFA) in the right soils, especially when you want vibration-free installation, minimal spoil, and stronger pile performance.
Why Choose FDP
Unlike CFA, FDP piles are installed by displacing soil rather than excavating it. That displacement densifies the surrounding ground, boosting shaft friction and bearing capacity while greatly reducing spoil.
Key benefits include:
- Increase pile capacity through soil densification
- Accelerate production with no spoil handling
- Install vibration-free—ideal for urban, adjacent, or sensitive sites
How FDP Works
The FDP tool loosens soil at the tip, displaces material laterally into the surrounding ground, and densifies it during extraction—while grout is pumped through the hollow stem. The result is higher pile capacity than typical excavated methods, with reduced concrete overconsumption and no spoil to manage.
Soil Conditions Are Critical
FDP requires truly displaceable soils and careful geotechnical evaluation. Termination criteria, pile design, and installation parameters must align with site conditions. This is where ECA’s engineering support becomes essential, helping contractors confirm feasibility, set the right criteria, and optimize the design before production begins. Knowing when FDP does (and doesn’t) fit is critical; in non-displaceable soils, productivity and quality can suffer quickly.
FDP with ECA
ECA supports FDP from planning through production: high-torque BAUER rigs up to 150’, stocked FDP tooling in 14”, 16”, 18”, and 20” diameters, integration with Olin grout pumps, and operator training that drives consistent, repeatable, high-production results.
